Snowbound Trails Cowl
Puddles buried this pattern - pattern is retired.
When the temperatures drop and the snow covered world invites you out to play, turn to Snowbound Trails Cowl for winter warmth and knitting interest. Surprisingly easy, this pattern features five textured double knit sections that are braided together to create the hip and colorful design.
Tech edited pattern includes written directions, charts, notes on sizing, two construction methods (one worked flat & in the round with less seaming, and the other worked entirely flat with a bit more seaming), and a braiding/ plaiting (UK) schematic. Works with your favorite worsted or Aran yarn as exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Finished Measurements:
25”/ 63.5cm around by 7”/ 18cm tall.
Materials:
1 skein Aran weight yarn – MC
1 skein Aran weight yarn - CC
Estelle’s Cloud Cotton shown – Brown (MC), Black (CC)
100% organic cotton yarn
164 yd/ 150m, 3.5oz/ 100g
US 8/ 5mm circular needles
US 8/ 5mm straight needles
Yarn needle
1 stitch marker
Gauge:
16 sts and 24 rows over 4”/ 10cm in St st. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Special Notes:
• The majority of the pattern is double knitting where the Stockinette shows on both outward facing sides. On the CO, Rnds/ Rows 3, 5, 7, & BO the yarn is double stranded. The double stranded Rnds/ Rows lock the double knitting sections together. Rnds/ Rows 3, 5, & 7 are the only Rnds/ Rows in which purl stitches show on the outward facing sides.
• MC is always the first st in the sequence, CC is always the second st in the sequence. If not careful with the stranding you may have to reorder some sts to ensure you work each stitch into the stitch of the same color.
• Remember to weave in your ends before binding off. Once you bind off you won’t have access to them.
• The cowl is completely reversible! For extra color interest flip some of the finished pieces before Braiding/ Plaiting (UK).
• Before braiding/ plaiting each piece measures 24”/ 61cm around (long) by 2”/ 5cm wide. The size is easily customizable! For a taller cowl work more Rnds/ Rows keeping Rnds/ Rows 3, 5 & 7 evenly spaced. To adjust the cowl around, increase or decrease the CO as a multiple of 18 or an even number. Then adjust Rnds/ Rows 3, 5 & 7.
