This pattern is called “snowdrift hat” because I drafted it in white yarn during the first snowfall of the year, and the cable ridges remind me of a snow drift. If I had started with the Noro, it would probably be called “magic eye hat” because the combination of the stripes and the cabling reminds me of the Magic Eye books in the library when I was in elementary school.

Note: the stitches can get VERY tight because of the cabling every row, even if you don’t ordinarily knit tightly, so you may want to go up a needle size or use thinner yarn to compensate.

For yarn, I used:

  • Caron Simply Soft for the black
  • Red Heart Super Saver for the white
  • Noro Kibou for the variegated
  • Red Heart Super Saver and misc. stash yarn for the 3-color gradient

I used size 6 needles for all examples, which was perfect for the Noro and Caron and WAY too tight for the RHSS. Also, because the RHSS examples were so tight, it accentuated the gross squeaky feeling that yarn sometimes gets. Would not recommend. (that’s why it’s not listed as a suggested yarn on this pattern! But I included it on the list for completeness)

As far as yardage goes, I was able to make two adult-sized hats with the Noro yarn casting on 80 sts at the beginning, with a small amount of yarn left over, so the total yardage used is probably somewhere just short of 150 yards
