This rug is worked in surface crochet into a non-slip rug mat. It is worked in two passes, one laying over the other, to fill the entire mat. The finished rug has a short, dense pile and a zig-zag pattern.

I used colourful stripes for the under layer, then white on the over layer to tone everything down.

The usual problem with crocheting into a grid is that covering all the edges in one pass without crossing yourself is restrictive. The standard solution requires lots of turns, which is a little obnoxious, and cuts down on your pattern options. For this rug, I wanted to experiment with a finished piece that had crossings as a feature, not a bug. The first layer is set down all at once, then the upper layer is worked over and between the first stitches. A lighter-weight yarn and chain spaces keep the crossings from feeling bulky.

130 m each of three colours, 400 m of a fourth colour in a lighter weight for a 2 x 3 foot mat.
