This shawl was designed for my sister. “So close” is an inside joke we have had for years. She is my best friend and I wanted her have something incredibly special. She isn’t just knit-worthy, she is design-worthy!!!!!

Watching her wear shawls I have knit for her, she never pays mind to the “right” or “wrong” side. For this reason, I have designed this shawl to be completely reversible and worn in many ways. It can be worn as a shawl (styled front side, for a modern look) but also wrapped double, to go right around your shoulders to keep more of you warm. (Almost like a poncho-feel, with a shawl look.) Due to the shape and drape, it stays put no matter how you wear it, making moving around to do your daily tasks with no problems.

The pattern has written instructions as the design is easy to memorize and a chart wouldn’t be necessary. There is a ton of lace but it’s so simple, keeping an accurate stitch count isn’t a problem. Make a mistake? Pfffft, no one will ever know, keep on knittin’!!!!

The skill level required for this pattern is very easy beginner. If you know how to knit, yarn over, KFB, and K2TOG… you can knit this pattern!!! There is also a picot bind-off, which is optional. The only extra technique you need to know for this pattern is a cable cast-on. I have included very detailed notes and I link to a couple great youtube videos to help with this if you haven’t done it before.

As an added bonus: every section of the pattern has approximate grams and yards/metres of yarn used for each section. So even though the pattern is written for three colours, you can use as many as you like (even using scraps, if you fancy.)

WHAT YOU NEED:

Fingering weight yarn
Pictured sample is knit in Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn:
Color A- Seed (cream with gold flecks) 668m / 728y (167grams / just over 1.5 skeins)
Color B- Float (blue) 412m / 449y (103grams / 1 skein)
Color C- Stone (grey/tan) 342m / 373y (85.5grams / 1 skein)

Most skeins of Hedgehog that I have purchased come with 100-110grams of yarn. I have included the exact amounts I have used above.

I also knit a second sample using various indie dyed yarns. You can check out my project page on Ravelry for more details, but one of the skeins had exactly 100 grams and 372y for color C (with 5 grams to spare) and it still worked out perfectly! But please check your yardage ahead of time, to be safe.

Not all fingering sock yarns are alike. Hedgehog is a fine fingering weight, with light elasticity and a nice drape. My second sample used lots of plumper fingering weight yarns, all with more elasticity. As a result, I had more than enough yarn but the extra elasticity blocked the shawl out to about 4-8 inches bigger all around. It’s already a huge shawl design, so a couple extra inches doesn’t bother me, but it is good to note this when selecting your yarn.

NEEDLES:
3.75mm
This piece is worked flat, so using straight or circular needles is for your preference.

I knit just a tiny, itty bit tighter than most patterns ask for, so I knit up my sample on a 4.0mm circular needle, with a 30” cord. The 30” cord makes it a bit bunched up, but again, this is my preference. You can use a longer cord, if you choose.

GAUGE:
Garter section blocked=
10sts in 2 inches
20 rows (10 garter ridges) in 2 inches
I’ve given gauge in 2 inch swatches for the garter as each section in the shawl isn’t that big. Lace section blocked= (measureddiagonally)
10 eyelets by 15 eyelets in 4 inches
I don’t aggressively block my shawls but I do take the time to make sure all the eyelets in the lace are properly opened up. Why do the lace if you don’t let it be all that it can be?!?

SIZE & MEASUREMENT:

as mentioned above, different yarns produce different results. Blocking can also vary your finished measurements..

The model in the pattern photos is a size 34 and about 5’5” in height. Why is this important??? Well, if you see the drape of the shawl falls around her hips and you are shorter in height or width wise, the finished shawl will sit differently on you. Shawls tend to be “one size fits all” but nothing is more heart breaking than spending hours knitting something that doesn’t sit the same on you as it does on the model.

The picot bind off… Now to be completely honest, I never fully enjoyed the picot bind off because the picots were so tight and close together. I have included instructions to a spaced out, stretchy picot bind off that makes my heart so happy. This is optional but I encourage you to give it a try!!
