Help with the guage swatch: CO 20 sts, work garter stitch for 8 rows, work purse stitch for 8 rows keeping the first and last 2 stitches in garter stitch, then work garter stitch again for 8 rows, bind off. The center portion of the swatch (not including the 2 garter stiches at each edge) should measure 4 inches by 4 inches, 1 inch of garter stitch on the top and bottom and 2 inches of purse stitch in the middle after blocking.
