Description:
This scarf is called the So Simple Scarf because it is just that. It is easy to create from start to finish in one short evening winding down while watching television.

While it is so simple, the pattern yields a lovely, textured, flexible, classy finished scarf in long ridged rows. Using bulky (size 5 density) ombre yarn is an ideal choice because the ridged rows look as if there have been elegant color changes. (see photo examples) Solid worsted weight (4) yarns work well, too, especially if double-stranded.

This scarf is so versatile that it can be made to be worn by men, women, teens and children. You just vary the starting size for the length. A good rule of thumb regarding the length of winter scarves: crochet your starting chain as long (or slightly longer) than the height of the end wearer. This seems to work perfectly. Of course you could make it shorter or longer, as desired. Currently, winding a scarf around more than one time seems to be popular so for trendy wearers, just add more inches on your starting chain. Also, if crocheting a longer than typical scarf, remember to consider extra yarn.

Another point about versatility: The So Simple Scarf can reflect different styles and tastes from very classy to everyday outdoor winter wear. You can even change colors every few rows and produce a team color scarf for your favorite sports fan. So many possibilities!

About yarns: You can use just about any kind of yarn and even vary the hook size if you are using finer yarns. Personally, double stranding with regular worsted weight or triple stranding with sports weight yarns and using a large N hook works well if you don’t have some bulky yarn that you plan to use. The larger hook produces a flexible scarf that can easily wrap.

Specific yarns I have used include: Loops & Threads Charisma yarn, Paton’s Soy/Wool yarn, Lion Brand Homespun, Yarn Bee Diva Sequin, Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable, and Lion Brand Pound of Love (double stranded).
