Sock Giraffe
Inspired by traditional sock monkeys, this guy sits approximately 8 inches high. The only seaming involves stitching the ears and horns into place. Limbs are attached as the pattern is completed. This is a weekend project for many, and for some its completely nerve racking. Newer knitters tend to take to it more naturally.
Needed Materials: 36 yards of Yarn 1 (Y1) Undyed DK weight yarn, 80 yards of Yarn 2 (Y2) Self Striping DK weight yarn, 1 set Size #2 DP needles, 1 12-inch Size #2 Addi Turbo Needle, 2 skein black DMC floss or 4-6 yards of black sport weight yarn or string, Polyester Fiber-fill,
Skill Level: Intermediate/Advanced
Useful techniques
Sock Knitting
Provisional or Turkish Cast On
Three Needle Bind Off (we use a similar technique which will be easier to understand if you know this technique)
A point to keep in mind when “consolidating” stitches. Its just a variation of the three needle bind off but instead of binding off the stitches completely you leave them live on the needle.
You can substitute the Turkish cast on with a provisional or long tail cast on but you’ll have to pick up stitches once you complete row 15.
For stripes, I recommend a self striping yarn. Color changes become tedious as this project progresses.
***NOTE: Rnds 7 - Rnds 30 should read as follows.
Round 7: (k2tog) x 7, k2, (k2tog) x 7, k16 (32 sts)
Rounds 8 & 10: knit all 32 sts,
Round 9: (k1, k2tog tbl, k1) 4 times, k16, (28 sts)
Round 11: (k1, k2tog tbl) twice, (k2tog tbl, k1) twice, k16, (24 sts). You will now be working rounds of the neck and body.
Rounds 12-30: knit all 24 sts,
******NOTE submitted by a knitter: Round 16 of the body should read (didn’t find this in the pattern errata, had to figure this one out):
(k8, m1) twice, k6, m1, k4, m1, k6, (m1, k8) twice (54 sts)
