The theme for the Daddy/Daughter dance this year was “50’s Sock Hop.” Now I don’t know about you, but authentic looking 50’s wardrobe was hard to come by back in the 80’s when I was a kid, so I was initially dumbfounded by this choice.

Then I realized my only option was to make something. So I sketched out a halter and a poodle skirt and got to work. Just as I finished the halter, my daughter says, all sass, “I’m not wearing that. I’m going to wear my blue dress with the flowers!”

“But that isn’t 50’s!” I argued. Then I promptly put my foot in my mouth because while the halter was a piece of cake, I was not looking forward to the poodle skirt at all.

So she wore the blue dress and was in good company since not a daughter there wore 50’s clothes. Go figure.

But the halter! It’s still cute! So here it is in all its quick and easy glory. This looks good in solid colors, stripes, variegated….I know because people have tried them all with adorable results. (Check out those project pages…would you believe one of those was made by a girl who is only 11 years old? Wow!) Toss a jean jacket over this and your little girl can wear it well into fall.

Besides hook and yarn, you’ll need a button to complete this top.
