This pattern has been thoroughly tech-edited and knit-tested. Thank you to my wonderful testers.

Sockception is a comprehensive how-to guide for making two-at-a-time socks using the double-knitting technique. The pattern is really about the technique; there is nothing particularly fancy about the sock design. It is a basic pair of socks incorporating my preferred heel and toe methods, with every step described for execution with double-knitting.

One of my motivations for creating this pattern was to dispel the myth that you need to be a wizard or a genius to double-knit a pair of socks. This technique is no different than any other knitting technique in that there is a specific process to be followed to achieve the objective, and that there may be some mistakes made while you are learning. If you are willing to do things a bit differently than you have always done them, you can do this thing.

The pattern is written in a way that does not assume that you already know how to double-knit socks; therefore, previous experience with double-knitting, or even sock knitting, is not necessarily required for this pattern. That being said, beginners to both techniques may have a steeper learning curve.

Gauge:
8 stitches and 11 rows per inch in double-knitted stockinette

Sizes:
small, medium, large, larger (6.5”, 7.5”, 8.5”, 9.5” foot circumference)

Materials needed:

  • 1 skein of fingering weight sock yarn.

  • Knitting needle in size needed to obtain gauge (2.0mm – 2.5mm suggested). I prefer using a 9” short circular, but DPNs or a long circular can be used.

  • Cable needle, 4 stitch markers, and 1 progress keeper.
