Socks from the Cabana D'yarna
SOCKS KNITTED FLAT AND NO SEAMING INVOLVED? yes please!
For some weird reason, socks are that kind of project that you might absolutely love and always have one pair on the go or they are on the “NO WAY I’ll ever make some” list. I’m not particularly keen on knitting socks in the standard way. I don’t exactly know why: the fight with DPNS (hedgehogs’ wrangling) or magic looping? Can’t really explain it, as none of these techniques are bothering me.
A wee while ago we hosted a Knit along on my Facebook page in an attempt to try a different technique and tackle socks without using DPNS or magic looping.
Yes, they are worked flat (back and forth) but no seaming is involved, just a simple but clever way of joining the top of the leg to the sole.
The sample was knitted in a 4 ply sock yarn double stranded with a lace weight mohair for extra coziness. These socks make excellent bed socks or lounge socks. You could make them slightly longer in the cuff and they will become good gumboot socks.
Alternative yarns:
1) 200-250m of 4ply Sock yarn and same amount in lace weight mohair (the 2 fibres worked double stranded) or
2) 400- 450m of 4 ply sock yarn to work double stranded or
3) 250m - 300m of 8ply (dk) yarn (Wool/nylon blend)
This pattern comes with Instructions for a standard M (size US9 ladies) however there are suggestions for other sizes.
Please note my knitting style is quite loose, if you are a firm knitter you might want to go to 3.25mm or 3.5mm needles.
