I have so many memories of my mom in the kitchen, baking Irish Soda Bread. It was a tradition every year, at both St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas, that she would bake loaf after loaf using every pan we owned. They would then cool on every available surface in our home.

Afterwards, loaves would line the hallway, packaged up to be delivered to friends and extended family all around town. The lucky recipients who were on the list would wait excitedly for their delivery and some would even have a plan of how to slice and freeze their loaf to make it last as long as possible. Soda bread was one of the few things that my mom baked and her recipe was—in my opinion and many others opinion—the best. She made it by sight and feel, never using a measuring cup, whether she was making one or ten!

After she passed away, it was thought that the recipe was lost, but after many tries I was able to recreate it from all of the memories of her making it. Soda bread was always such a big part of our lives. I remember being a young child and having it packed in my lunch box as a snack. The smell of it will still bring me back to being a little girl. And every time I bake a loaf, I am reminded of my mom and her famous soda bread.

Many Irish families have their special family recipe and each will say theirs is the best and that’s true for me as well. My mom’s is the best. It’s an honor to share it with you along with a trivet pattern to rest your hot pan on.

Needle:
US 9 (5.5 mm), 40” (100 cm) circular needle or needles needed to get gauge

Suggested Yarn: Blue Sky FibersOrganic Cotton Worsted, Worsted Weight, 1 skein100% organic cotton; 150 yards (137 m)/100 grams
or any Worsted weight cotton yarn of your choosing
Sample uses color plum dusk, approx. 150 yards (137 m)

Gauge: 9 sts/14 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in pattern using US 9 (5.5 mm) needles or whatever size needle gives you the fabric you would like.
