Sofa Foot Covers, or Warmers
by A Lady
This pattern is from The Workwoman’s Guide (1838) and is for a decorative sack/bag which could be placed on the sofa and one’s foot or feet placed inside of it to keep warm. It is worked in the “double knitting” stitch of the 19th century which creates a two-layered fabric as it is knitted.
A border of twelve rows is worked first and then, twelve stitches continually on both edges in a “fancy stitch” to make it stand apart from the double knitting of the main part of the cover/warmer. “A fringe sewn on all round” is suggested as a finishing touch.
In keeping with many patterns of this era, there is no stated needle size or type of yarn or gauge.
