In conceptual art, the idea (or concept) behind the work is more important than the finished object. As artist Sol LeWitt famously said, “The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” Think of the idea as a set of instructions that determines how the artwork will be made. Some conceptual artworks—LeWitt’s Wall Drawings for instance—can be made by anyone who owns the work by simply following the artist’s written instructions. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts owns Wall Drawing #33 (1970). Although it is realized in colored pencil on a wall, I think it can also be interpreted in wool to be worn.
