This particular yarn gradient immediately evokes a gorgeous sunset and a half-circle shawl is the perfect form to capture it. The rays of this sun twist and curve in art nouveau-esque patterns as they fade into the blusih-purple of the night sky.

This pattern combines garter stripes and two-color slipped-stitch cabling to make the rays to stand out against the background, while still allowing the knitter to work with only one color at a time.

Adapting this pattern for a different gradient set: You will need approximately 450 yards total for your gradient. The Fiber Optic Paintbox gradients contain 15 colors of about 30 yards each, but you can easily substitute a different gradient set. Divide 450 by the number of different colors in your set and you will get the number of yards that you will need of each color. The first section, before the CC is joined, took about 30 yards (1 mini skein) of the gradient set, so that can be useful to see if you are on track gauge-wise.
