”SoloSpun Band”
A Headband and Beanie pattern in One Act
by Corrado Lark
The Needs:
Yarn:
-For the Small, Medium and Large headband sizes, 50g of Amanda Solomon’s handspun Bulky merino yarn.
-For the Extra Large headband and the Beanie adaptation, use at least 75g of Amanda Solomon’s handspun Bulky merino yarn.
Needles:
-US 10 (6mm) 16” circular needles or DPNs.
-US 11 (8mm) 16” circular needles or DPNs.
-For Small and Medium Sizes: US 11 (8mm) magic looping circular needles or DPNs.
Notions:
-A stitch marker.
-A darning needle.
Gauge:
-12 stitches and 18 rows per 4” blocked stockinet with larger needles.
Sizing:
-Small (Medium, Large, Extra Large)
Final Measurements:
-Brim: 17” (20”, 23.5”, 26.5”)
-Length (as written): ~5-5.5” for all sizes.
The Notes:
Bulky Handspun yarn is a joy because of its irregularity. Gauge will absolutely vary, so adjust the size you knit accordingly.
I wear my headband with the reverse stockinet side out (inside out from the way you knit it), but to each their own.
Optional: Use a US 10.5 (6.5mm) 16” circular needle for Round 2 of the pattern to make the leap in needle sizes more easily accomplished.
The Backstory:
Short and sweet: It was the end of a fantastic event, Stitch Up Brooklyn, when Amanda Solomon handed a friend I was with an extra little skein of her amazing hand spun yarn. The friend then offered to give it to me, and I couldn’t have been more excited.
I had enough to make a headband, and I’m plenty happy with that. Thanks Amanda!
This was my first time playing around with Word to do my pattern layouts, and with the pattern being simple I figured I could release it for free because it’s also been a while since I’ve done that! I have plenty of other patterns for sale as well if you enjoy this one and want to support my work.
