Solstice Lanterns is a colorwork tam with original motifs depicting lit lanterns as a symbol of the long darkness in deepest of winter, from which emanates a warm glow of light. I-cord cast-on, corrugated ribbing, choice of working 3 colors in rows for lights (total of 6 rounds in whole tam), or duplicate stitch at finish.

Poetically speaking, the lanterns have a deeper meaning for me. A light in the dark is hope, from our hearts shines a beacon for the future.

By using multiple colored lights (worked in duplicate stitch at finish) one can make this tam into a festive Christmas Lights theme, for which an extra tree lights chart is included.

Yarn: Shetland 2ply fingering, 1 ball of each color -- only a small amount of lantern light (C4) needed, and, if using 25g balls (Jamiesons), possibly more than 1 ball for background (MC).

Gauge: 7-8 sts = 1”

Prototype shown in Elemental Affects Shetland colors: Main color (MC) = white, Contrast 1 (C1) = Deep Garnet (38), C2 = Dark Forest Moss (45), C3= Lichen (03) and C4 = Old Gold (25).

Comparable Jamiesons Spindrift colors: MC=Natural White, C1= Cardinal (323), C2= Moss (147) , C3= Bracken (231, and C4= Mustard (425).
