About the Pattern
Spring in the Sonoran Desert brings chilly mornings, that quickly give way to gusty, sunny days. When the shimmering heat of the summer is still a few weeks off, I find myself reaching for layers. My first is typically a t-shirt, then a hand-knit cardigan or shawl. But I shed my knits by 10 a.m. and spend the majority of my spring days without hand-knits. I find this unacceptable. I try to design sweaters that aren’t just easy to make, but easy to wear, and there’s nothing simpler for me to wear than a solid-colored tee. So why haven’t I designed one already? It’s a mystery.
There are many cotton and linen blends that would work beautifully for this sweater. Given the somewhat loose gauge, some may require an undershirt, but the one pictured, knit with Purl Soho’s Linen Quill, does not.
To give this sweater the same feel as the t-shirts I consistently reach for, I used a tubular cast-on and bind-off to mimic folded hems without additional bulk of facings. I made the body straight and long. After working short rows at the back neck, I inserted three rows of eyelets, which are a pleasant design feature, but serve primarily to differentiate the front from the back. (The back has more space between the collar ribbing and the eyelets.)
