Sonreí
Sonreí (pronounced sohn-rray) means “I smiled” in my mother tongue, Spanish. This design is a celebration of kinship and place. Throughout the year I often steal away to northern New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains for fresh air and forest tranquility. As I step through the trees I memorialize my grand and great grandparents who lived and worked around and upon these mountains, cultivating modest crops and a culture of kinship. A kinship with one another and with the landscapes that were their home. This connection resonates deeply within my family, and it is in the trees and beside the streams that I whisper it forward to my children. Sonreí consists of motifs that echo the branches above and on the forest floor, the river stones that dance below the babbling surface of the waters, and the paths traveled in love and labor by my ancestors. Most lovingly, Sonreí is named for those profound moments when I find myself breathing with nature, in peace, and I smile…
Sonreí is a modular shawl. The main body (knit in MC) utilizes a very traditional triangle construction, then the additional elements are added along one edge using various applied techniques. You will learn a few knew construction tid-bits with Sonrei, amidst plenty of relaxing sections as well.
This design features Wayfare by Crave Yarn, an aran weight yarn (182 yds/100g). The yarn and relaxed gauge (using US10-6.0mm needles) results in an incredibly drapey and deliciously embracing fabric.
Yarn Requirements: MC (300g) and CC (100g) needed.
Design shown in: Numa (MC) and Seduce (CC). Kits are currently available from Yarn Culture.
