Sontag from 1861
Sontags or bosom warmers were popular during the mid 1800’s, and multiple patterns can be found in period magazines and books. This pattern was featured in Godey’s 1861. It works quickly, and is decorated with an Ermine border. The Ermine border is a knit strip of white with embroidered black dots. It is commonly seen as a trimming on period knit patterns.
Sontags could be closed with a button on the back. Or, it can be tied shut with a corded tassel.
The pattern does have sizing notes, and is very adjustable. The one pictured is a bit on the trimmer side. Feel free to make yours go over the shoulder if you want the coverage!
