Gauge is not important here. This is a BEGINNERS pattern. It was written as an assignment to help a beginner crocheter to really master the single crochet.

If you’re a beginner trying this pattern, don’t stop if your stitches are not all uniform at the very bottom. As you continue you will see your stitches get better and better! That is part of the beauty of this project! You can SEE your own improvement and it will become an invaluable piece to look back on and share with others as you master other lovely crochet techniques over the years.
