The South Shetland Islands are nothing like their northern namesakes; they lie off the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and are mostly ice-covered! Therefore, if you plan to visit them, you will want a warm (but pretty) scarf to take along. In this design, I have used traditional Shetland lace patterns: “Crest O’ the Wave” and “Trellis Diamonds” with ladder edging. Since it is worked entirely in garter stitch, the scarf is essentially reversible. I chose a
color that reminded me of glacial ice.

The use of a sport-weight yarn knitted at a relaxed gauge produces a lacy fabric that is still thick enough to provide warmth. If you love the look of South Shetland Lace Scarf Shetland lace but shy away from very fine yarns, this pattern may inspire you to give it a try!
