Souvenir of summer
The “Souvenir of summer”-cardigan is worked from yarn I brought home from my vacation in Norway earlier this summer. The windling and beautiful roads brought me through the mountains of Jotunheimen to the small village, Sogndal, situated in Sognefjorden (the longest fjord of Norway). There I found a lovely little yarn-shop, and I couldn’t resist buying some yarn …..
Design
The lower body of the cardigan is worked entirely in lace-pattern. Starting from the bottom-up the hem looks like small shells. The cuffs are embelllished with a lace-section. The long sleeves (worked in one piece with the body) are worked like set-in-sleeves, which ensures a great fit.
Construction
The construction is entirely seamless.
Lower body is worked bottom-up and flat to underarms.
Sleeves are worked bottom-up and in the round to underarms.
Pieces are joined and the upper body is worked in one piece and flat. Sts are picked up for the neckline as well as for the buttonbands.
Sizes
6months: 45 cm/17.75” / 9 months: 49 cm/19.25” / 1 year: 52 cm/20.5” / 18months: 56 cm/22” / 2years: 59 cm/23.25” / 3 – 4 years: 63 cm/24.5” / 5 years: 66 cm/26”
Materials
Yarn: I recommend that you use a sport weight yarn with great stitch-definition. I used the sport weight ”Alpakka” from Dale Garn to work the cardigan. This yarn comes in balls of 133 meters/145yards. You will need 2/3/3/3/4/4/5 balls of this specific yarn to work the cardigan. Needles: Choose needle size to obtain gauge. I used needle size 3 mm/US2.5, this is a suggestion only.
For the lower body you might use circular or straight needles. For the upper body I recommend a circular needle. For the sleeves you might use a set of dpns or a circular needle (if working the magic loop). For the neckline and button-bands you can use a circular, or straight needles. Notions: 4 removable stitch-markers, separate holders, buttons 13-15mm/0.5-0.6” across.
Gauge
26 sts in stockinette sts = 10 cm / 4”
Knitting skills
Intermediate. Techniques used are cast-on, bind-off, 3-needle bind-off, picking up of sts. The lace goes over 4 rows and 9 sts, it is repetetive and easy to memorize.
The pattern
The lace of the body is charted, as well as written out row-by-row.
Please note that the eyelets of the cuffs are written out only.
There is a schematic. All measurements are in cm’s as well as in inches. All necessary stitch-counts are given.
