Souvenirs et sentiments cardigan
It was a true joy designing and knitting this shawl-collared cardigan.
I loved playing with the cables, seeing how easy they knit up and how the pattern became intuitive after a few repeats.
And working with my testers was so satisfying.
I’m borrowing the words from one of my testers: Versatile cardigan, both elegant and sporty, comfy and cute, with a chic and cozy collar, with belt or without and beautiful in many different yarns.
Test knitters used tweedy, rustic, fluffy, classy yarns and the cardigan looks great in every version.
Design
Cables are embellishing the fronts and the sleeves.
Between the cables you work the double moss-st pattern (the simple textured pattern that I love so much!).
The hem, cuffs, shawl-collar and belt are worked in k1p1-rib.
Construction
The cardigan is knit in a seamless construction.
The lower body is worked in one piece over fronts and back.
At underarms work is divided and the upper fronts and the back are continued in separate pieces.
The shoulders are shaped by short-rows and worked up by the 3-needle bind-off method.
The sleeves are worked top-down, starting from the sleeve-cap that is shaped back and forth from picked-up and knit sts around the armhole opening. From the underarm the sleeves are worked in the round until bind-off.
The shawl-collar is worked in one piece, from picked-up and knit sts around the armhole openings.
The belt is worked back and forth.
Sizes
Finished chest measurements, when the collar is folded over: 89/94/99/104/109/114/119/124/131/137 cm = 35/37/39/41/43/45/47/49/52.5/54”. The sample is worked in size 1, with approximately 9 cm/3.5” of positive ease. I recommend that you use 0 - 12.5 cm/5” of positive ease. Above 12.5 cm/5” of ease will give you an over-sized garment.
Materials
Yarn: I recommend that you use a DK weight yarn that knits up to gauge, to work the cardigan. I used ”Pure Wool” from Gepard in black, to work my cardigan. This yarn comes in balls of 50 gr/1.76 oz and 115 m/126 yards. Of this specific yarn you will need 1265/1325/1425/1550/1625/1725/1850/1950/2025/2150 m =1380/1450/1555/1690/1775/1880/2020/2125/2210/2345 yards. Please note that yardage may vary from yarn to yarn, and from knitter to knitter.
Needles: size 4 mm/US6 for the main-body and sleeves.
Size 3.5 mm/US4 for the hem, cuff, shawl-collar and belt.
Gauge
24 sts and 26 rows in double-moss = 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4”.
