THIS IS A KNITTING PATTERN, NOT SOCKS. Please read the pattern description.

Have you seen an axolotl? If not, do yourself a favor and Google them - their outrageously cute faces demanded that I create a pattern around them!

The pattern is written to work for any type of sock knitters… double pointed needles, magic loop, two circulars, you name it. The head gills and tailfin are stitches picked up and knit onto the sock - or, you can cast on the stitches and sew them to the pick up stitches as guidance. The legs are worked separately and sewn onto the body. If you’re cringing at the toes, don’t! They’re created by a cast off; you’ll find guidance photos within the pattern.

This pattern has two different photo tutorials for parts of the patter that may be confusing.

While any heel substitutions would be possible with this pattern, instructions are given for a heel flap heel.

Sizes in Pattern:
Child’s Large/Woman’s Small (approximately women’s shoe size US 5-7)
Woman’s Medium (approximately women’s shoe size US 7.5-9)
Woman’s Large/Men’s Small (approximately women’s shoe size US 9.5-10)

Note about “Child’s Large”: Sizes 9-12 years will likely be size Small in the adult sizes pattern, and sizes 12+ will likely be size Medium or even Large in the pattern. This may require adjustment of the foot length, but should otherwise match the pattern’s instructions.

Materials Needed:
• 420 - 550 yards of sock weight yarn (Color A)
o Pattern uses Knit Picks Hawthorne in Daphne
• 125 yards sock weight yarn (Color B)
o Pattern uses Knit Picks Hawthorne in Custom Dyed Colorway
o Recommended: Knit Picks Hawthorne in Camellia
• (4) 9mm buttons
• (4) US 1 Double Pointed Needles
• (4) US 2 Double Pointed Needles
• Pinch of stuffing.
• Tapestry/Yarn Needle

Optional: 10 yards of color coordinating eyelash yarn (this is applied to the head gills. The gills are convincing without the eyelash yarn, but it does add to the overall appearance.)

Gauge:
Stockinette Stitch on US 2s:
9 stitches & 12 rows in 1”
(Gauge is not crucial to this pattern, and a slightly smaller gauge will be fine. The yarn used is a thicker than average sock weight yarn. I’d recommend against any gauge larger than this though.)

P.S. Don’t mind that only one sock is photographed - taking pictures involves rearranging my entire living room, and truthfully, I just didn’t have the time to do so yet!!
