Easy to knit, and makes a great last minute gift - it’s a good project for beginning knitters. I’ve been knitting garter brims for a lot of years - they’re easy to do, fit just about any size head, and are attractive to boot!

Both this toque and the mitts listed separately, feature a ‘placket’ such as is used on shirts and blouses. As for the name ‘Spats’, they reminded me of the shoe coverings we wore with our band uniforms back in my high school days - those same types of spats were worn by the gentry in years gone by.

Knowledge required: Cast on, Bind off, Knit, K2T (knit 2 together), Knit in the round.

Materials:
US 8 16” circular needle and DPNs (I use my straights for the garter segment, and carry the circular on the side to be picked up)
Stitch Markers
Worsted Weight (4 - Medium weight) yarn (I used Lion Brand ‘Scarfie’)
Buttons to complement or match your mitts (your choice for number and size)
Yarn needle
