Worked flat in garter stitch using short rows for the thumb gusset, these mitts are easy enough for beginning knitters, but quit to work up for a last minute gift.

So, where does ‘Spats’ come from?

When I first put them on, they reminded me of the spats (shoe coverings) we wore with our band uniforms back in my high school days - those same types of spats were worn by the gentry in years gone by.

This pattern makes a long mitt - no bare wrists with these! If a shorter mitt is desired, simply cast on fewer stitches. It can also be used to create a dialysis mitt for someone whose hands and arms are cold after a procedure. Suggestions for altering the pattern are on the last page. (PS - these mitts pair nicely with the toque called ‘Spats - Part Two’ listed separately. Currently working on a pattern for boot cuffs to match!)
