YARN: Tamm Sport in 2 colors. A similar weight of yarn may be  substituted.  GAUGE: 6.5 stitches and 10 rows per 1” in  stockinette at about stitch size 9. This makes a  firm, tight fabric. 
SUBSTITUTING YARNS AND CHANGING  GAUGES: Any yarn that will knit easily on any gauge of machine may be substituted by  using the numbers in the chart at the end of the pattern instead of those given in the  instructions. The numbers that might need substituting are underlined in the pattern  and a letter appears next to each. Find this letter in the chart to choose the right  number for your particular yarn.  MACHINES: The gauge is given with standard machines in mind. However mid-gauge  machines can match it closely enough at a stitch  size towards the middle of the dial.
