Do you have lots of leftovers? Maybe sock yarns? Maybe DK yarns? This pattern works with both!
Speck-tacular Hat is writtten for 2 different gauges. You can make a lightweight version in sock weight yarn for cool spring or autumn mornings, and a DK weight one later, for colder weather.
Using partial balls of a multicoloured yarn and a solid, you can play with colour combos for a ‘speck-tacular’ result and you only ever have to work with one colour at a time!

The pattern is both written and charted and there are two height options: a fitted beanie, and a tall beanie for those who prefer a bit of extra roominess. It could also be easily extended for a fully slouchy version.

Gauge fingering: 28 st and 72 rows in 10 cm (4 inches) in slipped st pattern.
Gauge DK: 24 st and 56 rows in 10 cm (4 inches) in slipped st pattern.
Gauge is measured on larger needles before blocking. Differences in gauge will affect the size of the finished hat and your yarn usage. Stitch gauge is more important than row gauge, as height is easily adjustable.
Sizing: One size to suit the average woman’s head approx. 56 cm (22 inches) with two height options. Fitted beanie is approx. 20 cm (7.5 inches) high; tall beanie is approx. 23 cm (9 inches) high. Height is adjustable.
Needles fingering version: 2.5mm (US 1.5) and 3.5mm (US 4). The fabric of this version is less dense than the DK version.
Needles DK version: 3.5mm (US 4) and 4.0mm (US 6). If you prefer a more relaxed fit for the brim, go up one more size for the rib. The purple sample has a relaxed brim.
Needle size is a recommendation only, and you may need to change needle size to meet gauge. You can use a short circular, a long circular using magic loop or dpns. If using a short circular, you will need to swap to dpns or magic loop as you work the crown.
Yarn: Two colours of fingering weight or DK yarn. The pattern works best with a solid or semi-solid main colour (MC) and a multi-coloured contrast (CC). For MC allow approximately 30-35g, depending on style made. For CC, allow 25-30g.

The blue-brimmed fitted sample was made using DK weight yarns: Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic 8 ply and Fluff&Nonsense Falklands DK. It used less than 30g of each yarn.
The red-brimmed fitted fingering weight sample was made with Fluff&Nonsense BFL sock in Weird Sisters and Australian Merino Sock in Heartfelt. It used less than 25 g of each yarn.
The green-brimmed tall fingering weight sample was made with Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 4 ply and a sock yarn from Fiber Lily (I’m not sure which base exactly). It used less than 30g of each yarn.
