A deceptively simple scarf designed in honor of a not-so-simple character, Spencer’s Chessboard pays homage to the resident genius on Criminal Minds, Dr. Spencer Reid. Knit flat on straight or circular needles, this pattern is great for beginners looking to increase their skill set by adding slipped stitches and texture to make a simple scarf look more complicated than it actually is. It’s also great for intermediate and advanced knitters looking for a quick knit for yourself or the Criminal Minds fan in your life! The best part--this pattern is reversible! It looks great on both sides, so it’s like getting two scarves in one!

Finished sample measured approximately 8”x60” and dipped slightly into a second skein of the suggested yarn to add to the length. Depending on yardage, this could be a 1 or 2-skein project based on your preferred length. Just bind off at the end of a pattern repeat when you reach your desired length.

Gauge: 20 sts and 32 rows=4” in scarf pattern, however, exact gauge isn’t crucial for this project.

Materials: US size 5 straight or circular needles, sewing needle for weaving in ends

Recommended Yarn: The sample used a little over 2 skeins (approximately 400 yards total) of Soft Shimmer Silk Sport by Expression Fiber Arts in color Aruba. This yarn base is no longer available, but you can substitute any sport or DK weight yarn, such as EFA’s Luster Superwash Merino Tencel Sport or Superwash Dewy DK.
