Spica Moon
The “Spica Moon” shawl has the shape of a crescent: While decreases at the sides shape the outside, the inside will get its curve from the fact that the 2-colored slip stitch pattern draws the fabric together more than the Garter background.
You start at the long side, so be sure to buy enough of both colors as you can’t stop early in case you run out of yarn. The advantage of this approach is that your rows will get shorter as you go. For the outer curve, you will decrease at both sides, only gradually at first, then with increasing speed, until you finally put several stitches per row on hold. At the same time, the “Spica” slip stitch pattern will recede constantly, from 80% of the initial width to a tip of only 3 stitches. In the end, you will work a Garter edge in main color around the sides and upper edge by picking up stitches from the Garter edges and resuming those stitches on hold.
Yarn requirements:
Approx. 600/ 700 m of the main color (MC) and also 600/ 700 m of the contrast color (CC).
Much of the effect depends on your color choice. Use a (Light) Fingering yarn which knits up to the specified gauge. Choose any yarn with a stitch definition which brings out Garter ridges well.
For my sample, I have used
Yundi & Grete Handdyed Mohair Lace (65% Mohair, 35% wool, 700m/ 100g)
held together with
Ruppert Garne Soft Lamb (425m/ 50g, 100% wool),
a nice wool yarn at a very reasonable price with an amazing color range.
The 1200-1400m are calculated for using 1 strand only - if you use 2 strands held together, it will be 2400-2800m.
If you are a loose knitter, you might need a bit more.
If you don’like knitting with 2 strands held together, I suggest you try Ruppert Garne Mohair Tweed, which already includes the wool AND the Mohair component in one yarn and has the right yardage.
Needle size and gauge:
Use a 3,5mm needle.
Gauge (after blocking):
23 sts x 46 rows in Garter,
23 sts x 60 rows in Garter slip stitch.
Measurements
2 sizes available:
Approx. 1,95m/ 2,20m long x 0,45m high (at highest point at center), after blocking.
