Spinner
Geometry, tall buildings, ice crystals, sharp edges, crisp lines; in cold country these are rounded, softened by the drifting snows that winter brings. The crisp lines and geometric forms made with yarn overs, decreases, and cables are softened by the fuzziness of the mohair in the yarn. Beads add the sparkle of snow flakes illuminated against a night sky.
This shawl is worked from the top down, using short rows to create the crescent shape. A firm cast-on and loose bind-off help make blocking easier.
Finished size Wingspan: Approx 39 (47, 55, 63, 71)“ / 99 (119.5, 139.5, 160, 180.5) cm
Length at center back: Approx 13 3/4 (14 1/4, 15, 15 3/4, 16 1/2)” / 35 (36, 38, 40, 42) cm Shown in size 71”/180.5 cm
Yarn: Lace weight; 350 (450, 525, 600, 700) yd Catherine Lowe Couture Yarns Silk/Mohair #1 (60% Kid Mohair/40% Cultivated Silk) in Black Violet. Catherine Lowe yarns are sold in increments of 100 yd / 91.5 m, not by weight or by the skein. The yarn used is equivalent to fingering weight. Yarn used for model has more yards per gram than other well-known similar yarns. Those other yarns are listed here on Ravelry as lace weight yarns. Because of the fuzziness from the mohair of this (and those) yarns, the yarn knits up more like a fingering weight yarn.
Gauge: 18 sts and 40 rows = 4” / 10 cm in Rib Pattern, after blocking. 18 sts and 32 rows = 4” / 10 cm over Chart A, after blocking. Correct gauge is not critical for this project, but your final measurements and yardage requirements may vary, if your gauge is different. To save time and to ensure accurate sizing, check gauge.
Needles: Size 6 US / 4 mm circular needle, 40” /100 cm long or longer. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: 150 (200, 225, 250, 275) size 8/0 glass Pearl seed beads (optional), size 13 US / 0.85 mm crochet hook for placing beads (optional), cable needle, tapestry needle
Stitch patterns: Charted only.
