With the permission of Plymouth Yarns, I developed this pattern as a complement to their Spiral Hat Pattern for Adults. This one goes from a New Born up to a 8 to 10 year old.
The pattern is worked in Stockinette and Reverse Stockinette Stitch along with increasing on one side and decreasing on the other side. When the hat is finished it will look like a parallelogram prior to sewing up the side using the Kitchener stitch.
The good news is there is 2 videos on YouTube to help make this hat. The first one is “Spiral Hat how to by Stitch Niche” which shows how to do the provisional cast on, knitting the hat and finishing with the Kitchener stitch. The second video called “How I finished the Spiral Hat” is how I closed up the top while touching a bit on the actual making of the hat.
The size of the hat can vary from yarn to yarn. There is a note at the bottom of the pattern on how to make it larger and longer. I use straight needles in size 7. That makes the stitches a little smaller and the hat has more body. Plymouth Yarns has a yarn called Colorspun which has a soft striping design.
1 ball of this yarn will make all three sizes. Or one adult size hat. The pattern for the adult size is also a free pattern through Plymouth Yarn. Also on Ravelry. Search by “F086 Spiral Knit Hat”.
