This pattern is worked from the bottom up, first by working the bottom edge flat in garter scallop lace, then sewing it into a ring.

Stitches are then picked up from the top of the band and the remainder of the cowl is knitted in the round. The pattern consists of several different sections as the cowl is worked upwards, in order: bottom band, stockinette 1, seed stitch 1, diamond motif lace, seed stitch 2, spiral lace, seed stitch 3, chevron lace, seed stitch 4, stockinette 2, and finally ribbing and bind-off.
