I designed this little Splat Frog for beginners.
It’s much easier to learn to crochet if your project is fun and inspiring and I hope this quick little project will inspire you.

The Splat Frog is made using single crochet stitches, crocheted in continuous rounds. You’ll also learn how to make a magic ring that won’t come undone and the foundation half double crochet stitch.

The whole beginner tutorial is available for free on YouTube (both right and left-handed versions) on my channel, Carolyn Zaki.
The pattern is in English-only but you can select auto generated subtitles in your own language on YouTube.

Beginner Version:
Over 170 step-by-step photos and clear instructions.
I only assume you know how to hold the yarn and hook and how to make a chain. (Video linked in pattern if you need help with these.)

Intermediate Version:
Skip the beginner steps and dive right into crafting the Splat Frog. Over 70 photos with clear instructions.

Versatile and Creative:
Great for school clubs, crochet groups, or teaching your kids and grandkids to crochet.
Can be used as a pocket-sized fidget toy for anxiety management.

Handmade Sellers: Feel free to sell your own handmade products made from this pattern, but please use your own photos.

I hope you find my little Splat Frog inspiring!

The pattern uses basic crochet stitches and is written in US terms.

Finished dimensions when using size 2 (fine/5 ply/18 wpi) yarn:
3 cm tall (1.2 in), 5 cm (2 in) diameter body, 8 cm (3.2 in) wide including the legs.
(Change the size of your yarn and hook to change the size of your Splat Frog. My big soft Splat Frog was made using Bernat Velvet Plus yarn and the pastel frog was made using chenille yarn.)
If you’re a beginner, please start with a crochet cotton. It’s much easier to see the stitches when you use cotton.

You will need:
3.5 and 3 mm crochet hooks
Size 2/Fine/5 ply/18 wpi:
green (15m/16.5yds) for the body, base, and legs,
black (4m/4.5yds) for the mouth and white (3m/3.3yds) for the eyes.
Size 1/super fine/3-4 ply/23 wpi:
red (1.5m/1.6yds) for the tongue
Safety eyes and stuffing
Please embroider eyes if you are making this frog for a child under 3 years old.
