Spring often seems to bide its time before its arrival, starting slowly with just a hint of warmth and sunshine, and a few wee buds that appear before the trees and hedges completely burst out in a sea of colour. These mitts are just the same – offering just a hint of cables and bobbles in the shape of a floral motif, against a background of ribbing. It’s the promise of something beautiful, but still subtle and sleek – just like that little sprig of flowers pushing up from the new grass!

These mitts are worked in the round from the cuff up, and feature a cable-and-bobble motif placed on the back of the hand, along with a thumb gusset and modest twisted rib pattern all over. Written for Malabrigo Arroyo, or your preferred sport-weight wool yarn.

This pattern uses CHARTS for the cable patterns.

Knitters will need to:

  • work from a charted pattern
  • work in the round
  • work twisted stitches and cables

MATERIALS
• Malabrigo Arroyo 100% superwash merino wool, 335 yds/100g skein, 1 skein
• 3.25mm/US #3 double-pointed needles, set of 4, OR 32-40” circular needle if Magic Loop method is preferred
• cable needle (unless working cabling-without-a-cable-needle method, described in notes)
• waste yarn or stitch holder
• tapestry needle

SIZING
• S(L) Fits hand circumference 6.5-7.0(7.25-8.0) ins around.
(If in doubt, measure hand circumference as a basis for choosing size. Finished mitts are very stretchy as they include plenty of ribbing.)

GAUGE
On 3.25/US #3 needles, OR needle size required to obtain gauge:
• 26 sts/34 rows over 4 ins in stockinette stitch
• 10 sts/8 rounds over 1 inch in ktbl, p1 ribbing in the round, when relaxed
