This project combines easy stitch motifs with multidirectional knitting, for a project and finished object that are both pretty interesting. Work from the top down to establish a base, follow the directional changes, and enjoy watching a tonal or gradient yarn come to life.

Carapace is a medium-fast project—a little more involved than the first 2025 Spring Feverish, but still relatively quick for a shawl-style knit. If you’d like to knit this as a full-sized triangle shawl, you should find it quite easy to add repeats once you’ve got the hang of them.

You only need yarn, a crochet hook, your preferred circular needle for working flat, and a stitch marker to make this kerchief.

Materials:

  • About 330 yards of sportweight yarn; sample shown in Kroy Socks FX Camo Colors
  • 1 24”+ circular needle in US4-5/3.5-3.75mm, or size needed for gauge, used to work flat.
  • Removable stitch marker
  • Crochet hook, 2.25mm or sized to match yarn
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:
Gauge is 21 sts and 42 rows over 4”/10cm of 4-row ridge pattern, worked flat and blocked.

Skills:
Intermediate-ish: knit flat, knit and purl, wrap and turn short rows, pick up stitches
