This three-color cowl is on the large side but it is fun to knit and can be worn in a variety of situations. The cowl has a scallop edging that flows into a tulip pattern and eventually into a beautiful swallowtail butterfly. Each icon of spring is framed by garter ridges and a new wave pattern.

I like to create patterns that are not only beautiful but also fun to knit. In this instance, I did not include charts as I felt that this would make the pattern unduly difficult to read with the multiple stitch patterns.

If desired, the knitting of this cowl can be very versatile. The pattern can be altered by choosing which sections to repeat. If a narrower cowl is desired then consider knitting just the New Wave, Butterfly, and New Wave sections with the Garter Ridge framing by casting on 155 stitches. If other alterations are decided upon then be mindful of stitch count when casting on.

Level of Difficulty: Intermediate (comfortable with knitting in the round, yo, and several ways of decreasing)

Yarn:
Knit Picks Swish DK (100% Superwash Merino Wool – 123 yards) 1 skein each of the following:
Color 1: Rose Heather (Tulips)*
Color 2: Haze Heather (New Wave Pattern)
Color 3: Wonderland Heather (Butterfly)*
or around 375 yards of a DK weight yarn
I used almost the entire skein of C1 and C3. If you knit loosely consider buying an extra skein of each color to ensure you have enough of the same dyelot.

Needles:
US 7/4.5mm – 16” circular

Tapestry needle to weave in ends
Stitch marker to mark beginning of the round

Gauge: Butterfly – 5 ⅞” per 31 sts and 4 ¾” per 32 rounds

Finished Dimensions: 30” circumference at the flared base, 27.5” circumference from the middle to the top and 15” tall
