Spring Onion Brioche Throw & Shawl
Inspired by a morning walk in freshly greening fields, with the light scent of buds and greens waft on the air as Nature’s perfume.
The Spring Onion Throw celebrates Earth awakening from its Winter slumber.
Its deeply textured brioche design depicts delicate greens sprouting up through the earth to greet the warm Spring air. Scalloped edges flutter ever so slightly, like baby sprouts swaying in the soft Spring breeze.
This pattern complements every home’s decor and wears just as beautifully as a shawl.
Yarns: Fingering or DK weight yarn
Sample used both:
- Mad Tosh Merino Light (100% merino wool) fingering weight; 420 yards / 384 meters
- KnitPicks Preciosa Fingering Tonal (100% merino wool) fingering weight; 437 yards / 100 grams
Needles:
US #4 DPNs (set of 4)
US #4 circular needles
US #6 needles for applied I-cord bind off, or size for perfect tension
Notes:
- This pattern begins in the center using DPNs, increasing outward until the piece is large enough to knit in the round on 16” circular needles, then changing out to longer cables as it grew
- The beginning is a teeny bit fiddly on DPNs, but worth the effort once you’re a few rounds in.
- Since we are working in the round, the light side will always be facing you with the dark side in the back
- I used interchangeable needles and swapped out cable lengths (16, 24, 32, 40, and 60”) as the piece grew in size. However, using fixed needles in different lengths works just as well.
Yardage:
Approx 420 yds/384m per color (2,520 yds/2,304m total)
