Spring Posey Mitts are a quick knit, even with (fun) bobbles and “stem” stitches to knit. With the look of small clusters of flowers on them, these fingerless mitts are medium length, although you could always extend the ribbing, if desired.

Charts, step-by-step photos, and video reference are provided in addition to the written directions.

Construction: These mitts are knit in the round, starting at the wrist ribbing and working up to the top ribbing, with increases for the thumb that eventually get placed on a stitch holder (for finishing up with a few picked up stitches). The palm of the hand is knit in stockinette, and the back of the hand uses a variety of stitches on a background of purl stitches. There are 18 bobbles to knit.

Finished Size: One size that fits the average woman’s hand of 7 inch (17 cm) circumference / 5.5 inch (14 cm) length, but depending on the yarn you use and its stretchiness, the fit may be smaller or larger.

Yarn Requirements: approx. 150 yards of DK weight (samples shown, top to bottom, use the following):

  • (speckly purple/yellow/white) Yarn Love Amy March DK in “Bouquet.”
  • (speckly rainbow) Tosh DK in “Electric Rainbow.”
  • (pink) Tosh DK in “Fragrant.”
  • (light blue) Tosh Merino DK in “Cloud Dweller.”

Needles: US size 6 / 4 mm (16” / 41 cm long) circular needles and DPNs.

Gauge: Make sure to check your gauge to ensure a proper fit (it will also affect yarn usage and how aggressively you may want to block your mitts). Knit a gauge swatch: 16 sts / 20 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in stockinette and try on your mitts throughout the knitting process.

Special Stitches: To achieve the traveling, leaning stem stitches, cable stitches are used as well as stitches in which you either knit into the second stitch on the left needle or purl through the back loop of the second stitch on the left needle. These mitts have been test knitted.
