Spring Thaw
Errata (cowl only): End on a purl row (#2 or #4).
Welcome Spring!
Melting snow and budding sprouts of life…a sigh of relief after a long, cold winter…and a warm welcome to the perennial Spring Thaw.
Finished Measurements
Hat: 9” (23 cm) high x 20.5” (52 cm) around—fits average adult female.
Cowl: 9.5” (24 cm) wide x 24” (61 cm) long (see note).
Note: Cowl is worked flat until 48” (122 cm) in length, then seamed and lightly blocked to obtain above measurements.
Yarn (Makes Hat & Cowl)
Madelinetosh TOSH DK (100% Merino Wool; 225 yards 205 meters / 100 grams): 2 skeins “Great Grey Owl” (A), 1 skein “Celadon” (B).
To maximize yardage, I recommend knitting the hat first. That way, if your gauge isn’t perfect, you won’t run out of yarn. Better to have a few rows less in your cowl than to not be able to finish the top of your hat!
Needles
Hat: One 16” (40 cm) circular needle size US 8 (5.0 mm) + One set of 4 double-pointed needles size US 8 (5.0 mm).
Cowl: One pair straight knitting needles size US 8 (5.0 mm).
Gauge
Hat (Brim): 10.5 stitches & 12 rounds = 2” (5 cm) in Twisted Rib Pattern.
Hat (Main part): 21 stitches & 32 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in Lace Pattern.
Cowl: 21 stitches & 30 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Lace Pattern.
Notions
Yarn needle. Scissors. Tape measure. Stitch marker.
Skill Level
