The Sprout shawl is the third in a series of patterns using the concept of Assigned Pooling. It is knit seamlessly in two congruent triangles to create a generously sized parallelogram wrap. Assigned Pooling occurs when a change in stitch and texture is assigned to changes in color within a skein of variegated yarn. In this case, simple Stockinette Stitch is assigned to the main color to create a backdrop for the Sprout Stitch assigned to the accent color.

Every assigned pooling project will be as unique as the shape and the yarn you choose. Use these instructions as a basic guide, and let your creativity flow with the color changes in your variegated skein.

When choosing a variegated yarn, look for sections of accent color that run from ¼ to ½ of the total length of the hank. High contrast, whether in value, (light and dark), or in complement, (opposites on the color wheel), will have a higher impact. Simple combinations of two or three colors within a skein will make your texture stitches more noticeable. Lower contrast combinations and skeins with shorter, random color repeats and speckling will make it more difficult for the texture pattern to stand out.
