Spurdog is a texture-sampler shawl, knit on the bias and designed for button closures. It’s designed to be easily customized, and can be knit in multiple sizes, from kerchief to full-sized shawl.

Regular eyelet rows both divide the stitch patterns and offer places for the buttons to fasten, so you can style it multiple ways.

All the stitch patterns are pretty well-balanced for this one, and work is on the bias, starting from a small cast-on point. You can easily knit your project for virtually any reasonable finished size, whether you’d like a simple button-up kerchief in Dog Days style or a full-fledged new fall shawl.

It’s also nice for handspun, as you can adapt when the yarn starts to run out.

Materials:

  • 300+ yards or 1-3 skeins of Malabrigo Yarns Arroyo, or 300-900 yds of your own handspun (shown in about 300 yards of handspun)
  • 1 24-48” circular needle in US5-7/3.75-4.5mm, or size needed for gauge.
  • Tapestry needle
  • 3 buttons in size to suit eyelets (5/8 to 3/4” as a starting point for a project worked at gauge)
  • Optional: removable stitch markers, needle & thread for buttons

Gauge:
Gauge is 16 sts and 32 rows over 4”/10cm of garter stitch, worked flat and blocked. You can adjust your gauge to your choice of yarn.
