Spyrys is a knit shawl with lace stripes. It’s an asymmetrical triangle with an optional crochet picot bind off.
Spyrys means fairy in Cornish, and this pattern was designed for and named after a family friend and her love of fairies.

This pattern is fully written (English) and charted, with check boxes provided in the written pattern to keep track of rows.

It progresses quickly, and keeps things interesting because of the changing stitch patterns.

Skill level
Intermediate, someone comfortable working with knit and purl stitches, yarn overs, and knitted decreases.

This pattern has an optional (though recommended, if you have enough yarn!) crochet picot bind off, so a basic familiarity with chaining and single crochet is needed for that.

This pattern has 10 charts/sections, so please be aware that this pattern is long and has many pages. The actual stitch patterns are easy to remember, but the increase side and the lace edge vary the pattern edges. Complete stitch counts are included in written instructions.

Size
This is approximate, when blocked. Sizing may vary based on a variety of factors such as gauge, yarn, and blocking technique. These measurements are taken from a shawl with the crochet picot bind off. The shawl can be ended earlier, or it can be made larger, instructions for both are provided in the pattern.

50” x 75” x 68” (127 x 190.5 x 172.5 cm)
This is an asymmetrical triangle shawl. 50” crochet picot bind off edge (34 points), 68” knit lace edge (43 points), and 75” right side edge (129 yarn overs).

Yarn - light worsted/DK/weight 3, this was designed to be made with one cake of Lion Brand Mandala yarn, consisting of 590 yards. I used Mandala in Wood Nymph (pink and purple) and Mandala in Spirit (blue and grey).

This pattern, as I have made it, used exactly 555 yards. Crochet picot bind off uses approximately 45 yards (included in the final yardage count). It is quite possible that more yarn may be used, especially if gauge isn’t the same, so please plan accordingly.

This shawl pattern used 461 yards (2 skeins) of Caron Simply Soft (a weight 4 aran yarn) in White, ending with J after the first H and using size 11 (8mm) needles, and is slightly larger than both of the Mandala shawls I made. See the project page for more information.

Needles - size 8-10 US (5mm-6mm) OR any size that gets the correct gauge. I used size 10 needles. I recommend 24”+ circular needles, but I used 16” needles for the majority of my shawl and only switched to longer needles for the last two knit charts.

Hook - optional, used for the crochet bind off. Use a size close to your needle size - 8-10 US (5-6mm).

Gauge
16 stitches and 22 rows in 4 inches (10cm) in plain stockinette unblocked, about 10 stitches in 4 inches (10cm) blocked (stretched).

Remember, since this is meant to be a shawl, make sure the gauge is light - don’t use a thicker yarn than recommended, even if it gets gauge! It’s better to size up needles with the yarn - using a worsted (weight 4) yarn (the white shawl in pictures), I used size 11 (8mm) needles and got a larger gauge, but the shawl is overall nicer looking than a tighter gauge with the same yarn.

Gauge is not crucial for this pattern BUT gauge larger than this may result in yarn running out earlier than expected. A gauge slightly smaller than this will be safer if you’re concerned about yardage and shouldn’t affect overall size enough to really notice, especially once blocked.
