Square-bashing is a cushion based on a mathematical flexagon. It is made from 12 double-sided squares which are joined in such a way that the cushion has six different sides. It is really more a plaything than a cushion. The photographs show knitted and fabric versions.

This is the most frustrating flexagon. It can be very difficult to get back to the position you want.

We recommend making all of the flexagons smaller than our original versions. The instructions are for the size we made but can easily be adapted to be smaller.

Many years ago we published a book of patterns called Twists & Turns. Some of its patterns were more popular than others so they were re-written in more detail and removed from the book. The book has not been available for several years.

Frustrating Flexagon Cushions contains four ‘cushions’ that were in that original book. Their common factor is that they can all be twisted and turned in some way. They are called cushions but they are really meant to be decorative, or for their novelty interest. Whilst it is perfectly safe to sit, or lean, on them they will not be particularly comfortable. They are very frustrating because they collapse, unfold, and get tangled, and can take a very long time to get back into shape.

WoolhelminaToo drew lots of cartoons of eggs for the original book (Eggsentricities) and they have all scrambled into this ebook.
