Square Motif Belt with Pineapple Fringes
This wide hip belt is worked with join-as-you-go motifs . Edging and the fringed pineapple tips are worked separately. The belt body is crocheted with two strands of thread held together for strength while the pineapple edging is softer, worked with single strand of thread.
Yarn ideas: I think it is possible to make the motifs in sport weight yarn and the pineapple edging in fingering weight yarn to get a similar effect of the belt being stronger and the edging being softer. Try the motifs in different colors also. You can also substitute the fringes with lengths of yarn rather than crocheted strings, and use larger more colorful beads.
Hooks:
Steel crochet hook size 3 (1.3mm) (for edging)
Aluminum crochet hook size 4/0 (2.5mm) (for square motifs)
Notions:
Wood beads with holes large enough to fit two double-stranded crocheted ch strings (2 beads for ties and one bead for each square motif)
Gauge: Square motif=3 inches square after blocking (remember that belt with stretch slightly through wearing)
24 sts = 4” in dc, yarn doubled, with aluminum crochet hook size 4/0 (2.5mm)
Terminology: Pattern is written using US crochet terminology (see chart on last page for conversion).
