Required skills:
Knitted cast on, knit, purl, decrease 2 sts with the centre stitch on top (centre decrease), pick up stitches from previously knitted section, decrease by knit or purl 2 together, close the top of the hat by threading the yarn end through stitches, weave in ends
optional: turn the knitting direction in order to avoid rounds of purl stitches

Size: finished circumference 53.5-56cm/21”-22” – fits most adult heads. Height: 23 cm/9”.

Materials:
Yarn A: for mitered square band: Variegated worsted weight yarn. The sample in the picture uses BC/AB yarn from Fibre Art Studio on Granville Island (110 grams/220 m or about 4 oz/240 yds per skein). You need about 65m/70yds.
Yarn B for hat top: textured yarn that produces 12 sts x 20 rows = 4” square. The sample in the picture uses Kid Mohair Boucle from Fibre Art Studio on Granville Island (2 strands knitted together). 50 grams/200 m or 1 ¾ oz/220 yads per skein. You need about 160 m/175 yds of kid mohair yarn above, of half of that amount if using single strand of yarn.

Needle size: US size 8 or 5 mm single pointed needles and double pointed needles, or size to obtain the gauge.
You could use circular needles if you prefer magic loop method.
Gauge:
Each mitered square is 3” square
Kid mohair boucle: 12 sts x 20 rows = 4” square

Notions:
Tapestry needle, stitch marker
