Squares Dancing in Harmony
The craft listed is knitting because I can only choose one, and I think there is slightly more knit than crochet, but there are approximately equal parts knit and crochet.
I designed this piece to be a metaphor for life. I designed it for my step-dad to use in his office where he is a marriage and family therapist.
For me, knitting came second, so the pedigree pattern of knit garter squares which layers itself over the foundation of tradition in the granny squares represents “the new” layering over “the old.”
The sampler squares represent many different aspects coming together in peace and harmony. This could represent anything from personality types to flavors in a stir-fry. It is something I’d like to see for the world.
I think the waviness of the colors in the border adds a calming ebb and flow otherwise not present in the design. It seals the blanket with a geometric balance, and sometimes life is about finding your own personal balance, whatever that may mean for you at any given time. It might come in an unexpected way.
Yarn
For the blanket pictured, there were varying amounts leftover of each color, but I believe you will need all 16 skeins of yarn.
540 yards each of MC1 and MC2.
270 yards each of CC1, CC2, CC3, and CC4
Needles and Hooks
- I used 6.5mm sraight needles for the mitered garter squares and 6.0mm circular needles for the knit sampler squares.
- I found the 6.5mm crochet hook to be the only one I needed throughout.
Squares
Each square is 8”/20cm, give or take a quarter inch/half cm.
For the 8 sampler squares, I chose 4 knit squares and 4 crochet squares, listed with links in the pattern.
Pattern includes full written instructions and charts for each component.
