I like to hand out little trinkets to the Trick or Treaters who come by. This year I decided to make pumpkins, a member of the squash family. After trying a few patterns, I found myself wanting something even smaller with specific specifications, so I set out to invent my own and now I give to you: Squashington Square!

Yarn

• 10 yards for the pumpkin (shown: Red Heart Super Saver in Carrot)
• 2 yards for the stem (shown: Red Heart Soft in Chocolate)

Style and Size

October 2024 Edit: In preparing to transition this pattern to my new pattern template, I re-tested the instructions, and the yarn I used (it was the same hook) did not create the long-stemmed version. So if you want the long-stem, perhaps add a plain round of sc somewhere or…I don’t know…use Red Heart Soft for the stem?

The pumpkin can be worked from the top down or from the bottom up, and each gives an equally cute but slightly different squash. Try a thinner yarn and smaller hook and/or a stitch count pattern of 10-20-20-20-10 for the pumpkin body, for an even tinier pumpkin. This is not included in the instructions because the stem looks ridiculous with that size of pumpkin. But modify to your heart’s desire!

So go ahead and whip yourself up a pumpkin patch of Squashington Squares to hand out on Halloween or to make a garland or to have around in a bowl to celebrate autumn or any time of year!
