This pattern is written for beginning to intermediate knitters, but is suitable for anyone wanting to knit a friendly bear to keep someone company.

Skills needed knit, cast on/off, k2tog, ssk, double knitting (explained simply in the pattern)

Yarn Fuzzy, chenille or boucle yarns work well. The yarns listed on the pattern page are mostly (if not all) discontinued, but they provide an idea of what types may be used. You can also use non-novelty yarn to make an attractive bear, and don’t forget to check out the purl side before stuffing - it can also be attractive.

Needles Straight or cable needles appropriate for your yarn

Notions
-Tapestry needle
-Stuffing of your choice – polyfill, spare wool, fabric scraps. (if your bear has loose gauge, make sure to use dark stuffing with dark yarn)
-2 buttons for eyes (optional – can be a choking hazard if it’s for an infant) -Strong thread (embroidery floss, or dental floss) to secure the button eyes

Gauge The gauge depends on your yarn. Use the needles recommended on your yarn’s ball band. If in doubt, go a size smaller in order to make a sturdy fabric for your bear.

Size The bear’s size will depend on your yarn. DK yarn or light novelty yarn makes a bear roughly 10” tall, while superbulky chenille made a bear approx. 20” tall.

It is easy to modify the size or proportions of the bear.
