An ensemble of fishermen style socks & mittsand tam.

St Andrews Harbour is an historic fishing harbor in Scotland inspiring this timeless rugged fisherman gansey style socks. I have designed these socks for sport weight yarn, for men, women, boys & girls, and the rugged country life. Pattern includes substitution charts for fingering & DK weights equally.

Chevrons, cables and moss stitch panels worked into a rib structure, with charted panel worked down foot over instep to toe. Plus alternate simplified charts so that this pattern will work to fit xxsmall thru xxlarge.

Nearly an e-book of pattern variations! Pattern includes options to knit in many variations:

  • Buttonhole thumb fingerless mitts
  • Patterning option through gusset, or to toe
  • Legwarmers
  • Boot cuffs
  • Short kilt socks (adorned with kilt flashes or ribbons tied beneath cuff and folded down, this variation resonates the Scottish Highlands!)
  • Several patterning options to customize with
  • A separate tam pattern! ( see below)

Tam: As a bonus gift from my good friend Petra, I am including her tam pattern adapted from the socks chart, so you get two patterns for one pattern download! Petra’s link to tam dec tutorial.

The most recent update is March 28, 2018. If you are working from a pattern dated earlier you have an outdated version. Contact me or check your library for update notices. Thank you.

St.Andrews Harbour Socks are the counterpart to Fishermens Neck Gansey.

Notes about popular yarns:

Wool & Nylon sport-weight yarns under this search.

Kroy Sock Yarn: 166y=50g/ 332y=100g is sport weight, and a really great yarn for this sock! (see my project notes about it HERE.) 75% ‘washable wool’ and 25% nylon, but yarn knits up like vintage “rustic” sock yarn. In solid healther colors “Flax” or “Gentry Grey” are perfect if you can find them. I knit up a pair of socks with main chart A / 56st & US2-2.75mm needles, and it was very dense and stretchy at 7.25-7.5st = 1” gauge (circ = 7.5-8”) fitting womens med/large to mens small/med, but I recommend knit with 7 sts to inch in Chart A for mens large/xlarge socks.

Knit Picks Stroll= Great Kids Socks: At 230y=50/460y=100g, this yarn is fine fingering and very soft. I knit up a pair using main Chart A=56 sts and US2-2.75mm needles, at 8sts = 1”, and approx 7” circ. for womens xsmall, or child size 35-36. Knit with smaller needles and 8.5 sts =1” the socks would be smaller circ. and make great rugged tight gauge socks for children that are long wearing for play ~~ great size for kids! (See these project notes.)

I invite Any & All who are knitting St Andrews Harbour socks, mitts, or tam to bring questions, comments, great tutorial links, and otherwise general related chattiness to my Jenjoyce Group which exists just for knitters of Jenjoyce’s patterns. The kettle is on… see you there !
